Missed Medication, Missing Medication, When I Miss Medication

My mom missed her Medication.  When a senior misses a medication dose, it can be one of the detrimental miss to a senior’s health.  Studies show that the United States healthcare system could save over $7 Billion per year on unnecessary trips to the emergency room related to Medication Misses.  Not taking medication at the correct date or time can even impact people anyone.   But medication misses affect sick and working towards getting better.  The older someone is when they miss their medication the bigger effect it can have out the efficacy medicine.  This is especially true for people who are suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.  Getting someone with Alzheimer’s Disease to cooperate with anything can be physically and emotionally exhausting.  Not to mention this type of cooperation can turn into a 24/7 job.

Robin’s Problem

It is truly amazing how simple it is to take a couple pills at the same time everyday, can improve health and well being.  It is more amazing how simple misses medication times can dramatically impact health.  Here is a story about Robin Sherbets.  Robin couldn’t afford to put her mom in Assisted Living when she got ill.  Robin’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2020.  At first mom moved in with Robin and life was cohesive.  But as mom’s condition worsened, she became very forgetful.  Mom was on a litany of medication to treat ailments unrelated to her Alzheimer’s.  But her Alzheimer’s made it difficult for her to remember.  When Robin’s mom missed her medication, it would often result in an Emergency room visit due to blood-sugar.  Life became hard on Robin because of the Emergency Room visit frequency.

Mom is confused by her Pills
The Nurse’s Recommendation

By the fourth visit, Robin was recommended a specialty pillbox by a Registered Nurse.  This Pillbox was special since it had a built in timer.  Robin was skeptical since she had been setting pill alarms for mom.  Yet, mom still managed to miss her medication.  The alarm on her smart phone was not helpful since mom would silence the notification and still forget to take her meds.  But this Nurse convinced Robin that it would be helpful.  This pillbox was the Med-Q Pillbox with flashing lights and a built in alarm.

The Solution

Since the alarm was in the pillbox itself, there was less of a chance that Mom could silence the Alarm before forgetting to take her pills.  Before Mom would hear the alarm, go to silence the alarm, silence the alarm, go to take her medication, then forget.  With the Alarm built right into the Pillbox, Mom had the pills right in her hand.  Therefore she took her pills before she ever had the chance to forget.  Also, the correct pill compartment would flash red, indicating which pills to take.  The flashing light helped, even more, to eliminate confusion.  Also, the pillbox was big font that was easy to see.  There was no more confusion or forgetting when it came to Robin’s mom taking medication.

The Result

With Robin’s new alarm was set for mom, she would take her pills every time.  Mom didn’t have to learn or remember everything.  The pillbox was so intuitive, it almost seemed like the took the correct dosage on accident.  Robin would simply fill the pillbox and set the alarm.  Now as long as mom was in the same house as the pillbox, she would take her medication.  Mom never remembered to take her own medication.  However, mom knew she needed to turn off that beeping alarm.  In the process of turning off the alarm, mom would always take her pills.
